Couch to 5k

Katrina Robson19 November 2020

More than two decades ago, Josh Clark penned a nine-week schedule to help skeptical, would-be runners get off the couch and on the move!

He named the training plan “Couch to 5K” and since then, this schedule has become one of the world’s most popular exercise programs.

How does it work?

A 9 week running plan, for absolute beginners, it involves 3 runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the 9 weeks.

What do I need?

If you are up for the challenge, but don't have the gear, the most important starting point is to look after yourself and source the right footwear.

Choosing a dedicated running shoe can help to protect you from common injuries and cushion your feet from heavy landings.

As for what to wear, just opt for loose, comfortable and breathable fabrics, and include a few thin layers for the different stages of your run.

Selecting the right footwear

Grip and support are crucial to preventing foot and ankle damage, as is a shoe that promotes the correct gait and helps you absorb some of the impact.

Berkhamsted Sports offers free consultations to all visitors, either in-store or online, to help you find the correct shoe for your body shape and style of running.

For the online service, the team will guide you through a range of shoes to sample and will send the options out to you, to try at home. This is to ensure you select the correct support and a shoe that will offer you longevity and be suitable in all weather conditions.

It is worth investing at the start of your running journey and there are a variety of price options to choose from.

Local running clubs

So you don't have to go it alone, the team can also put you in touch with local Berkhamsted running clubs, which are a great way to meet people and get the support and encouragement you need, so what are you waiting for......get in touch!
